Timothy M. Johns
Dr. Timothy Johns started following Jesus Christ in 1971 during the Jesus Movement. His conversion was powerful and dramatic. Immediately he began sharing the gospel with high school friends and started prayer and Bible study groups. God’s Spirit moved so mightily during those years that 25% of the student body came to Christ. While still a teenager, the Holy Spirit directed Tim to serve children in the inner-city of Los Angeles and led him to receive leadership training throughout Europe, the Middle East and Africa. This sobering exposure to life’s most serious problems (like poverty, corruption, breakdown in marriage and family) has motivated Tim to promote Christ’s Lordship and the advancing of God’s kingdom on earth, the only real solution.
After receiving his BA from Tarkio College in 1975, he married his college sweetheart, Janet. Janet also received her BA from Tarkio College in music education. A few weeks after their wedding, they moved to Pasadena, CA, where Tim received his Masters of Divinity from Fuller Theological Seminary in 1978. During his three years at Fuller Seminary, Tim served as a youth pastor at the Glendale Presbyterian Church.
After graduating from Fuller Seminary, Tim was ordained in the UPUSA denomination and became an Associate Pastor at University Place Presbyterian Church in Tacoma, WA. His focus was on youth and college age ministries. It is in Tacoma that Tim and Janet had their first child, Alissa.
In 1981, Tim received a call to be the Senior Pastor of Pine Ridge Presbyterian Church in Kansas City, MO. Jason, their son, was born that year. In 1983, the “Third Wave” of the Holy Spirit, which was largely promoted by John Wimber and the Vineyard, swept into their church. The manifest presence and power of the Spirit was amazing, resulting in many physical healings, deliverances, and new conversions. This outpouring of the Holy Spirit inspired Tim and Janet to follow Christ’s calling to plant New Testament churches that especially impact youth, poor, and unreached people groups with the gospel.
They partnered with Mike Bickle in 1985 and started a church-planting movement called “Grace Ministries”. Tim helped start several churches under Grace Ministries in North Kansas City, Lee Summit, MO and Richland Center, WI. In 1990, Grace Ministries came under the Vineyard Movement, and Tim was then a pastor in the Vineyard.
In 1992, Tim sensed that he was to begin preparing for his life calling, which was to be an “apostolic father” who raised-up churches that were passionate about holistically advancing Christ’s kingdom in cities, regions, and nations. Tim realized that most of the young leaders he trained would need to be bi-vocational, so he re-entered the market place in order to model church planting combined with “secular” employment. Tim and Janet started a residential housing rehab company. They purchased properties to rehab, rent, and sell. Janet got her broker’s license, so they could start their own real estate business. Tim and Janet started Skyview Realty and operated a successful company for many years. Currently, they own properties and oversee a business which rents houses and apartments. During this time, Tim completed his doctorate which combined training from Fuller Seminary and Regent University. The title of his dissertation was “Spiritual Family as the Emerging Apostolic Paradigm”.
On September 19, 1999, Tim and Janet were commissioned by a number of leaders to start Rock International “Tribe”, a trans-local spiritual family called to plant churches which help to advance Christ’s kingdom in cities, regions, even nations. The Rock International “Tribe” now has churches in seven states in the USA, and intends to help plant churches in other nations. Tim and Janet started Rock’s first church in the inner-city of Kansas City. That church helped to transform the inner-city by reducing crime and reaching the lost with the gospel. Tim also started a community development corporation called “Rock Solid Urban Impact” which has helped to launch “The Urban Farming Guys” and initiated practical help in the inner-city like neighborhood gardens. www.rsui.org and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AyRMvXZIKaw
Tim and Janet just recently moved to Fort Collins, CO to serve a new church they helped plant in Laramie, WY. The Johns’ are also planting a church in the Ft Collins-Loveland area which is committed to the revitalization and restoration of The Church, so The Church can advance the kingdom in the North Colorado region. Tim writes training materials that equip the body of Christ to transform cities and regions, making disciples that obey Jesus in every area of life (personally, marriage & family, jobs & marketplace, education, media, arts, social & civil services).
Tim has been a keynote speaker at numerous churches and conferences. He also consults with church leaders, helping them to improve evangelism and discipleship in the context of small missional communities.
Tim’s passion is to reveal Father’s heart to all people. His mission is to inspire Christ’s Church to be a catalyst and resource which proclaims the gospel (in word and deed) within the context of loving natural and spiritual families, making disciples who can effectively reach cities, regions, even nations for the glory of God.
Tim and Janet have two married children and five grandchildren. Their children and spouses have a vibrant relationship with Jesus Christ.
